Why it matters
5,000+
digital accessibility lawsuits were filed in the US in 2025, most of them against online stores. Source: UsableNet

76%
of the independent boutique websites we scanned had at least one barrier that can block screen-reader or keyboard users.
Own sample, not representative: 78 boutique websites from a Google Maps search in Miami, scanned automatically with axe-core in a mobile view (home page plus up to one more page), September 2026. Counted: at least one finding of a rule that blocks screen-reader or keyboard users.
How it works
Install and scan
Valence opens your home page, a collection, a product page and the cart in a mobile browser and checks them with the open-source axe-core engine.
Understand every issue
Each finding shows where it is, how serious it is and how to fix it in Shopify: in your admin or in your theme code.
Fix alt text in bulk
Missing product image descriptions get a suggestion you can edit. One click saves them on the images, so they work in every theme.
Stay on top of changes
Theme updates and new apps can add new barriers. Pro scans your store every week.
Fixes at the source instead of an overlay
Overlay widgets add a script on top of your store. Valence shows you what to fix and fixes store data at the source.
| Feature | Typical overlay widget | Valence |
|---|---|---|
| Adds a script to your storefront | Yes | No |
| Changes your store data | No, it patches the page in the browser | Yes, alt text is saved on your product images after you confirm |
| Shows where each issue is | Varies | Yes, with page, element and a Shopify-specific fix guide |
| Theme code issues | Usually not addressed by the overlay | Explained step by step for you or your developer |

Questions
Will Valence make my store ADA or WCAG compliant?
No tool can promise that. Automated checks find only part of all accessibility barriers. Valence finds many common technical ones, helps you fix them and watches for new ones. For full conformance, also test with real users and assistive technology.
Does Valence change my theme?
No. Theme issues come with a step-by-step guide for you or your developer. Valence only changes store data, such as image alt text, after you review and confirm it.
Does Valence access my customers' data?
No. Valence reads your public storefront pages and your product data. It does not access orders or customer information. Privacy policy
Do I need a developer?
Alt text and many admin settings you can fix yourself. Some theme issues need small code changes; the fix guide is written so you can forward it to your developer.
What happens when I uninstall?
Billing stops. Your store's data in Valence is deleted when Shopify sends the deletion request, 48 hours after uninstalling.
Is this legal advice?
No. Valence is a technical tool. For legal questions, talk to a lawyer.
Automated testing detects only a portion of accessibility barriers. Valence lists findings from automated checks; it is not a legal assessment and does not certify conformance with the ADA, WCAG, the European Accessibility Act or any other standard.
